Beatrix Potter is best known for her children’s books featuring Peter Rabbit. Less well known is that she was an expert mycologist and botanical illustrator, held back by the prejudices of her day. SWSBA member Deborah Ravin lead a Beatrix Potter workshop on Friday evening, September 20, 2019 and Saturday, September 21 2019. The Friday evening session was in lecture format, with a PowerPoint presentation on Beatrix Potter, her art, and her scientific interest and research on fungi. Saturday was a session illustrating mushrooms with traditional watercolor in the style of Beatrix Potter. A number of exotic, edible, mushrooms were provided for samples, obtained from a local mushroom farmer. The workshop concluded in proper English style with afternoon tea.
Deborah Ravin is a professional medical illustrator and has taught botanical illustration at the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden. She has degrees in Biology, art and Medical and Biological Illustration.
